Effective Orthodontic treatments for jaw alignment issues

Jaw alignment is a critical aspect of oral health that can significantly impact one’s overall well-being. That’s why orthodontia is important in addition to routine dental cleanings. Without effective orthodontic treatments, you may experience discomfort, pain or gum disease due to misaligned teeth. Jaw alignment and bite correction treatments not only enhance the appearance of your smile but also ensure proper function of the teeth and jaws, leading to better oral health and comfort.

Understanding jaw misalignment

Improper jaw alignment is broadly referred to as a malocclusion. There are various causes for malocclusions, including genetics, injury or developmental issues. The most common type of misalignment is called a Class 1 Malocclusion, where the upper teeth slightly overlap the lower teeth.

When a Class 1 Malocclusion is combined with crowding, spaces, narrow arches or crossbites, the result may include difficulty chewing, speaking and even breathing. If left untreated, the misaligned bite may result in serious damage to your teeth and gums. If you find yourself struggling with these symptoms, it’s time for a trip to the orthodontist.

Our ever-evolving practice keeps us up to date on the latest technology to ensure an accurate diagnosis.  During our consultation, you will have the opportunity to ask any questions and discuss any concerns you may have about different treatment options. We’ll be happy to answer them!

Treatment options

Braces or aligners can effectively straighten teeth. Some teenagers and adults may think it’s too late for these treatments to be effective, but that’s not true. Both aligners and braces are beneficial for correcting bite issues in people of any age.

Several treatment options are available to address jaw alignment issues. Invisalign® offers an alternative with clear aligners, custom made for you. Damon Braces use a light “shape memory” wire that is changed every few months, so no more need to “tighten” your braces. Lingual braces, brackets on the back of the teeth, are just as effective as traditional braces, gently moving your teeth into alignment.

In severe cases, jaw surgery might be necessary to correct significant structural problems. We strive to help our patients find the perfect solution to their jaw alignment issues.
